The Hours & Assumptions

One of my favorite books and favorite movies is The Hours.  It happens to be on Showtime right now which we happen to be getting free.  A friend asked me recently for a list of movie recommendations and I jokingly said something like, “Just watch The Hours 4 or 5 times, that’d be my best recommendation.”  I generally don’t read books nor watch movies more than once.  I’ve read the book 3 times I think and tonight makes watching the movie #4 or 5.

I am entranced with the theme of assumptions in the story…assumptions of roles and behaviors.  One of my favorite parts is where the Virginia Woolf says to her sister about not being invited to something because the sister assumed she wouldn’t come:

“I’m saying that even crazy people like to be asked.”

A poignant address to communication and our lack of it in the case of assumptions.  A strong reminder that even in the toughest of times, a simple question can make the strongest of impacts.
