Today has been a day of seeing beauty. Like many of you, I watched the America’s Got Talent video of Grace VanderWaal several times. I was struck by her presence, and genuine willingness to just be herself. I loved it when they asked what she was going to sing and Grace replied, “an original.” And, the response was “REALLY?” It feels so rare in our culture of comparison and perfection to be original. People are surprised when we show up without apology as who we are. When we don’t hustle for our worthiness. When we are willing to sing the song of us. When we are willing to see our beauty.
Grace in all her beauty, radiance, and presence reminded me of my friend Mara. I am not talking about myself in the third person, I’m talking about Mara Kormylo who is a local therapist also certified in The Daring Way™. I messaged Mara and told her how I was reminded of her today through the gift of Grace VanderWaal. She replied, “That is such a compliment. Wow. Thank you for taking the time to tell me that …you clearly know that I would be touched to hear that.” To which I replied, “I love seeing the familiar beauty of each of us shining in others. Makes the world feel connected in a special way for me. And, yes, I feel like you get that.”
A moment of seeing beauty.
Today was also special because my best friend’s son moved out of their town after graduating college and landing a job out of state. He’s an amazing young man who I am proud to be like an auntie to. I’ve known him his whole life and have watched him grow into the man he is. I told my best friend tonight that I see her kindness, her thoughtfulness, her intelligence, her loyalty, and her love of life in her son.
And, again, I was struck by how much I love seeing the familiar beauty of each of us shining in others. Related or not, our beauty—our humanity is reflected in others. So often we are reluctant to see beauty in ourselves yet we can acknowledge it in others.
I believe our hearts shine for each other so we are able to fully see our own beauty.
I believe our hearts shine for each other so we are able to fully experience our humanity.
Where are you seeing our beauty?
